Virat Kohli (Hindustani: [ʋɪˈraːʈ ˈkoːɦliː] (About this sound list); born 5 November 1988) is an Indian cricketer and the current captain of the Indian national team. A top-class right-hander, Kohli is considered one of the best modern batsmen in the world. He plays for Delhi in domestic cricket and for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Indian Premier League (IPL) as a franchise captain in 2013.
Kohli was the captain of the India under-19 national team before winning the 2008 World Under-19 Championship in Malaysia. A few months later, he made his debut for India against Sri Lanka at the age of 19. Initially playing as a reserve batsman in the Indian team, he quickly established himself as a private in the ODI central order and moved on to the team that won the 2011 World Cup. He made his test debut in 2011 and dropped the "ODI expert" label with the 2013 test masses in Australia and South Africa. Having achieved the ICC primary ranking for ODI batsmen in 2013,  Kohli has also achieved success in the Twenty20 format, twice surpassing the Man of the Tournament in the ICC World Twenty20 (in 2014 and 2016).


Kohli took over as vice-captain of the ODI team in 2012 and surpassed the position of test captain following the retirement of Mahendra Singh Dhoni in 2014. In early 2017, he also became the team captain after Dhoni stepped down from that position. In Odis, Kohli has the second highest number of centuries and the best range of centuries in the running chase in the world. He holds the sector record for being the fastest batsman to 8,000, 9,000, 10,000, 11,000 and 12,000 runs in ODI cricket. Among Indian batsmen, Kohli has the highest test score (937), ODI score (911) and T20I score (897).


In 2017 and 2018, Kohli was awarded many awards, as well as the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy (ICC Cricketer of the Year); ICC Test Player of the Year 2018; ICC ODI Player of the Year in 2012, 2017 and 2018 and the world's leading Wisden cricketer in 2016, 2017 and 2018.He won the Arjuna Award in 2013, the Padma Shri Award in the Sports Class in 2017,  and the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award, the best sports award in India, in 2018.Kohli is considered one of the most famous athletes in the world by ESPN and one of the most valuable producers of athletes by Forbes.In 2018, Time magazine named Kohli one of the 100 most influential people in the world. In 2020, Kohli was ranked 66th on Forbes ' list of the 100 highest-paid athletes in the world in 2020 with an expected income of $ 26 million.
On 22 April 2021, in a match against the Rajasthan Royals, Kohli became the first IPL player to score 6,000 points in the IPL.


Virat Kohli was born on 5 November 1988 in Delhi to a Punjabi Hindu family. His father, Prem Kohli, worked as a fraud lawyer, and his mother, Sarah Kohli, was a homemaker. He has an older brother Vikas and an older sister Bhavna.According to his family circle, when he was three years old, Kohli would pick up a cricket bat, start swinging it, and ask his father to throw the ball at him. 


Kohli grew up in Uttam Nagar and began his education at Vishal Bharti Public School. In 1998, the West Delhi Cricket Academy was established and the nine-month-old Kohli became part of its first consumption.Kohli's father took him to the academy after their neighbours warned that "Virat should not waste his time playing cricket in the gully and, alternatively, be part of an expert club". Kohli studied at the academy under Rajkumar Sharma and at the same time played at the Sumit Dogra Academy in the Vasundhara enclave. Sharma recounts Kohli's early days at his academy: "He radiated experience. It became so difficult to silence him. He turned into a herbalist in everything he did, and I turned into the most impressed with his thinking. He was ready to fight anywhere, and I had to literally push him home after class. He just didn't want to leave." In the ninth grade, he transferred to the Spassky Monastery in Pashim Vihar to help him train in cricket. In addition to playing sports, Kohli also dressed well as a teacher, and his instructors remember him as an "energetic and alert child" The Kohli family lived in the Bug world until 2015, when they moved to Gurgaon.
Raina became Kohli's captain and vice-captain in the three series towards Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe in Zimbabwe in May-June 2010, as many first-choice players missed the tour. Kohli made 168 runs at 42.00 along with two fifties, however India suffered three defeats in 4 matches and were eliminated from the collection. During the training camp, Kohli became the fastest Indian batsman to reach 1,000 runs in Odi cricket.He made his T20I debut against Zimbabwe in Harare and scored 26 runs without defeat. Later that month, Kohli batted 3 for the Indian all-rounder during the 2010 Asian Cup and scored a total of sixty-seven runs at a median of 16.70 five.His struggles with form continued in the three series against Sri Lanka in New Zealand and Sri Lanka, in which he averaged 15 points.

Despite his poor form, Kohli was retained in the Odi squad for the three-match series against Australia in October, and during the most effective completed training camp period in Visakhapatnam scored his 0.33 Odi century–118 from 121 balls-helping to reach India's target of 290 after an early loss to the openers. After winning "Man in Uniform", he admitted that he was under stress to keep his place in the team after the disasters in the previous two series. Part of a largely inexperienced squad for the home Odi collection against New Zealand, Kohli scored 104 in the match hundred and five, his fourth ODI hundred and second in a row, in the first game, and accompanied him with 64 and 63* in the subsequent two suits. India finished a 5-0 whitewash of New Zealand, while Kohli's overall performance in the collection helped him become a member of the Odi team and made him a strong contender for a place in India's World Cup squad.In 2010, he became India's top scorer in Odis, with 995 runs from 25 matches at a median of 47.38, including three centuries.In January 2011, Kohli developed into India's leading run-scorer in the ODI series with a five-wicket haul on the South African tour in January 2011, with 193 runs at an average of 48.25, as well as fifties, each of which was defeated in India. During the series, he jumped to a wide berth in the ICC rankings for Odi batsmenand was named in India's 15-man squad for the World Cup. The inclusion of each Kohli and Raina in the World Cup squad has led to speculation as to which of the 2 batsmen will make the eleven. A few days before India won the match for the first time, Indian captain Dhoni indicated that an in-form Kohli would probably be preferable to Raina.


Kohli has performed in every form of India's successful World Cup campaign. He scored an unbeaten hundred, his fifth Odi century, in the first match against Bangladesh and became the first Indian batsman to score a century on debut in a World Cup. In the next 4 suits of the organization, he had low scores of 8, 34, 12, and 1 against England, Ireland, the Netherlands, and South Africa, respectively. With a lower back to pick up form with fifty-nine against the West Indies, he scored 24 and nine in the region-the most recent in the stand - off against Australia and the semi-final against Pakistan respectively. In the most recent match against Sri Lanka in Mumbai, he scored 35, a joint partnership with Gambhir for eighty-three years for 0.33 wickets after India had not placed every opener in 7th for 275. This partnership is regarded as "one of the turning points in the match, as India directly won the suit through six wickets and lifted the World Cup for the first time, given that 1983. 
Having found a place in India's test squad for the tour of Australia in December 2011, Kohli scored 132 points on the tour in form against the XI of the chairman of Cricket Australia to strengthen his case for a gap of within eleven games ahead of Rohit Sharma.Batting at a distance of 6, Kohli did not go beyond 25 in the first tests, as his defensive technique became exposed.While pitching on the boundary at some point on the second day of the second match, he pointed at the group along with his center finger, for which he was fined 50% of the claim amount by the match referee. He scored the most points in each of India's innings in the 1/3 test in Perth with forty-four and seventy-five, while India surrendered after their defeat in the 2nd innings in a row. In the fourth and most recent match in Adelaide, Kohli scored his first test century from 116 runs in the first innings.; this became the most effective century scored by an Indian inside the collection.India suffered a zero-4 whitewash, and Kohli, India's top scorer in the series, was identified as "the only shining spot in any other nightmare visit for tourists".

In the first seven claims of the Commonwealth Bank's triangular series against Australia and Sri Lanka, Kohli made fifty-77 in Perth and sixty-six in Brisbane-both in opposition to Sri Lanka India registered wins, a draw and 4 losses in these seven suits, which suggested they wanted an advantage to win their final group in form in the face-off against Sri Lanka in Hobart to stay in contention for qualification for the final collection. India earned a point advantage with the win, and Kohli turned into the named Man of the Match for his knockout effort, which included 24 runs in an over by Lasith Maling. Former Australian cricketer and commentator Dean Jones rated Kohli's innings as "one of the best ODI strikes of all time".However, Sri Lanka beat Australia 3 days later in their final group match and knocked India out of the collection. With 373 runs at fifty-three.28, Kohli again became India's highest scorer and the only centurion of the collection.


Kohli was named vice-captain for the 2012 Asian Cup in Bangladesh due to his quality performance in Australia. Chris Srikkant, chairman of the selectors, told reporters: "Hats off to Virat Kohli for the way he performed. We must begin to seek our destiny. The Selection Committee and the Board decided that Kohli is the future captain." Kohli became in good form at some stage of the tournament, finishing as the top scorer with 357 runs at an average of 119. He scored 108 in the opening match against Sri Lanka in India's 50th win, even as India lost their subsequent defeat to Bangladesh, where he made sixty-six.n his most recent top-flight suit in opposition to Pakistan, he scored a non-public pleasing 183 off 148 balls, his eleventh ODI century. Going in at 0/1, he struck 22 fours and a six in his innings to help India catch up with 330, their most successful ODI run to that point. His knockout was the best individual ranking in Asian Cup records, the highest score in a combined 2nd run in an ODI chase, and the best personal score against Pakistan in an ODIs, surpassing the previous record of 156 by Brian Lara. Kohli was offered Man of the match in both suits, which India won, however, India failed to qualify for the tournament final.

In July–August 2012, Kohli hit centuries in a 5-match ODI tour of Sri Lanka–106 off 113 balls in Hambantota and 128* off 119 balls in Colombo, winning the man in form in both video games. India won the collection 4-1, and as a result of scoring the most runs in the series, Kohli was named a member of the collection. In the only T20I match that followed, he scored 48 goals of 68, his first T20I fifty, Kohli scored his 2nd test century in Bangalore while touring India in New Zealand and received his first "Guy of the Year" award in Test cricket.  India got a 2–nil collection, and Kohli averaged 106 runs with a hundred and two fifties from 3 innings.  In the next T20I series, he scored 70 runs with forty-one balls, but India lost form, using one run and the series 1-0.  He persisted in excellent form throughout the season. 2012 ICC World Twenty20 in Sri Lanka, with 185 runs from five matches at an average of 46.25.He hit two fifties throughout the match, 50 against Afghanistan inside the group level  and 78* against Pakistan in the Super eights, prevailing over a guy fit for both innings.It evolved into the ICC's named "Team of the Tournament". 

Kohli's test form dipped during the first three matches of England's tour of India with a top score of 20, and England won the collection 2-1. He scored a patient 103 from 295 balls in the final form on a gradual and low pitch in Nagpur, keeping India in contention for the draw of the series. ESPNcricinfo praised Kohli for "proving his growing maturity to play exactly the form of innings that his aspect required", while Kohli described his knock as "mastering the innings" However, the suit resulted in a draw and England won their first test collection in India in 28 years. Against Pakistan in December 2012, Kohli averaged 18 points in T20Is  and four.33 in ODIS,  being hit by fast bowlers, particularly Junaid Khan, who ignored him at all three events in the ODI collection.  Kohli had a quiet ODI series against England, with the exception of a match-winning 77* in a 0.33 ODI at Ranchi, for a total of one hundred and fifty-five runs at an average of 38.75.
Kohli was serving as captain of the first ODI of the triangular series in the West Indies after Dhoni injured himself throughout the suit. India lost form by using one wicket, and Dhoni developed into the subsequently dominant of the collection, with Kohli being named captain in the final matches.For the second time as captain, Kohli scored his first hundred as captain, making 102 from eighty-three balls against the West Indies in Port of Spain in a win with odds of advantage for India. Many senior players, including Dhoni, were rested on a five-point ODI tour in the form of Zimbabwe in July 2013., when Kohli was first named captain of an entire series. In the first recreation of the collection in Harare, he hit one hundred and fifteen runs from 108 balls, helping India to chase a target of 229 and winning the Man in the Suit award.  He fought off two additional acts in the series, in which he had ratings of 14 and 58 no longer aired. India finished the series with five points-0; their first series in an away ODI series. 

Kohli had a successful time with the bat as part of the seven-match ODI collection against Australia. After scoring 61 in the opening loss in Pune, he hit the fastest century through an Indian in Odis in the 2nd suit in Jaipur. Having reached the milestone of just fifty-two balls and established an unbroken partnership with Rohit Sharma with a 2d wicket of 186 runs, which reached 17.2 overs here,  Kohli's innings of a hundred did not help India reach the target of 360 due to the lack of a single wicket with more than six overs to spare. This chase was the second most successful run in ODI cricket, at the same time as Kohli's knockout was the fastest hundred against Australia and 1/3 the fastest in the race. He followed that innings with 68 inside the subsequent paroxysm at Mohali in any other Indian defeat,\ before the next two paroxysms were washed away by rain. In the 6th ODI in Nagpur, he batted one hundred and fifteen from sixty-six balls to help India effectively chase down the target of 351 and complete the 2-2 build-up and got the man in form. He reached the 100-run mark in sixty-one balls, making him the third fastest ODI player by an Indian batsman, and also became the fastest batsman in the world to reach 17 runs in ODI cricket.  India completed the build-up after winning the final match, in which he ran out for a duck. At the end of the series, Kohli went on to star in the ICC ODI batsmen rankings for the first time in his career. 
In March 2008, Kohli was bought on a youth contract by Indian Premier League franchise Royal Challengers Bangalore for $ 30,000. He had an indifferent 2008 season, totaling 165 runs in 12 innings at an average of 15.00 and a strike rate of 105.09.  In his second season, in which he made a total of 246 runs at 22.36, striking out over 112 batters, while his team made the finals.[In the 2010 season, Kohli was the third-highest run-scorer for his team with 307 runs, averaging 27.90 and improving his strikeout rate to 144.81. 

Ahead of the 2011 season, Kohli was the only player remaining from the Royal Challengers franchise. In the same year, Kohli was appointed vice-captain of the team, as well as captain of the team in several matches when regular skipper Daniel Vettori was injured. Royals coach Ray Jennings has suggested that the 22-year-old forward will be a future captain of not only the franchise, but also the Indian team. Kohli was the second highest goalscorer of the season, behind only teammate Chris Gayle, and his team finished second in the IPL. Kohli accumulated a total of 557 runs at an average of 46.41 and a strike rate of over 121, including four fifties

In the 2012 IPL he was moderately successful, averaging 28 for his 364 runs.

After Vettori's retirement, Kohli was named team captain for the 2013 season. That year, the Royal Challengers finished fifth in the standings, but Kohli was successful with the bat. Averaging 45.28, he made a total of 634 runs with a strike rate of over 138, including six fifties and a best score of 99, and finished third in the season in points.
