Under his leadership, India has won the inaugural 2007 ICC World Twenty20, the 2010 and 2016 Asian Cups, the ICC Cricket World Cup since 2011, and the ICC Champions Trophy since 2013. Dhoni is one of the top scorers in One-day Internationals (ODIs) with over 10,000 runs scored and is considered a powerful "finisher" in limited-overs formats. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest batsmen and captains in the history of the sport.  He developed into additionally the primary wicket keeper to produce 100 stumps in ODI cricket.

Dhoni made his ODI debut on 23 December 2004 in Bangladesh, and played his first test against Sri Lanka a year later. He has been the recipient of many awards, such as the ICC Odi Player of the Year Award in 2008 and 2009 (the main entrant winning the award twice), the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award in 2007, the Padma Shri Award, India's fourth highest civilian honor, in 2009, and the Padma Bhushan Award, India's third highest civilian honor, in 2018.Dhoni became named because he captained the ICC World Xi trials in 2009, 2010 and 2013. He has also been identified on file on 8 occasions in the ICC World ODI XI groups, five occasions as captain. On 1 November 2011, Dhoni was awarded the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel by the Indian Territorial Army. He is the second Indian cricketer after Kapil Dev to receive this honour.

In addition, Dhoni has numerous captaincy records, consisting of most wins through an Indian captain in ODIs and T20Is, as well as most returned wins through an Indian captain in ODIs. He took over the Odi captaincy from Rahul Dravid in 2007 and led the group to the first ever two-way Odi series wins in Sri Lanka and New Zealand. In June 2013, when India defeated England in the most recent of the Champions Trophy in England, Dhoni became the first captain to win all three ICC trophies behind the scenes (World Cup, Champions Trophy and World Twenty20). After becoming test captain in 2008, he led the team to victories in New Zealand and the West Indies, as well as the Border Gavaskar Trophy in 2008, 2010 and 2013. In 2009, Dhoni further led the Indian crew to the top spot in the ICC test results.
Dhoni was born in Ranchi, Bihar (now in Jharkhand),  and he comes from a Hindu Rajput family. His paternal village of Lvali is in the Lamgara block of Almora district in Uttarakhand. Dhoni's parents moved from Uttarakhand to Ranchi, where his father Pan Singh worked in junior management positions in the MEKONG. Dhoni has a sister, Jayanti Gupta, and a brother, Narendra Singh Dhoni. Dhoni is a fan of Adam Gilchrist, and his idols during his formative years were cricket teammate Sachin Tendulkar, Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan, and singer Lata Mangeshkar.

Dhoni studied at DOW Jawahar Vidya Mandir, Shyamali, Ranchi, Jharkhand, where he excelled in badminton and football from the very beginning, and then obtained a degree in these sports chosen by the district and the club. Dhoni became the goalkeeper of his football group and was sent to play cricket for the local cricket membership with the help of his football teacher. Despite no longer playing cricket, Dhoni impressed with his wicketkeeping talents and became a regular wicketkeeper in the Commando cricket membership (1995-1998). Based on his overall results in club cricket, he was selected to compete in the 1997/ninety-eight season Vinoo Mankad Trophy under the age of sixteen, and he finished well.Dhoni focused on cricket after his tenth standard. From 2001 to 2003, he worked as a Ticket Controller (TTE) at Kharagpur Railway Station, located below South Eastern Railway in Midnapore (W), a district in West Bengal. His colleagues remember him as a very sincere, straightforward employee of the Indian Railways. But Dhoni also had a mischievous side to his personality. Once, after stopping in the railway quarter, Dhoni and a couple of his friends wrapped themselves in white sheets and walked around the complex, late for the night. The Night's Watch was fooled into believing that the complex was haunted. The next day, the story became big news.
In 1998, it was decided by Dhoni that, through Deval Sahay, he would play for the Central Coalfields Society (CCL) group.Until 1998, Dhoni, who was twelfth in the college, played faculty cricket and club cricket rather than expert cricket. One notable episode, while Dhoni was playing for the KKL, was when Deval Sahai gave him 50 rupees for every six strokes he landed in the Shish Mahal cricket suits of the match.Playing for KKL, he got a chance to fight off the order. He jumped at the opportunity, scoring a goal and helping the KKL move up to the ' A ' division. Deval Sahay, impressed with his strong hitting and dedication, used his contacts in the Bihar Cricket Association to secure his selection in the Bihar team. Deval Sahay, a former vice-president of the Bihar Cricket Association, was the president of Ranchi District Cricket at the time and was instrumental in promoting Dhoni to the huge stage of the Ranchi team, Bihar junior cricket team and eventually Bihar Ranji senior team in the 1999-2000 season. Within 1 year, Dhoni moved from playing in to the BCC Bihar Ranji team. Dhoni attributed Deval to Sahay for grafting the area to him.[38] Dhoni was included in the Bihar squad and the U-19 squad for the 1998-99 season and scored 176 points in five matches (7 innings) as the group finished fourth for six years and did not reach the quarterfinals again. Dhoni was not selected for the U-19 East Zone team (CK Nayudu Trophy) or the rest of the India team (MA Chidambaram Trophy and Vinoo Mankad Trophy). Bihar's U-19 cricket team reached the final of the 1999-2000 Cooch Behar Trophy, in which Dhoni made eighty-four to help Bihar field a total of 357. Bihar's efforts were paltry compared to Punjab's 839 and in the U-19, while Dhoni's all-country teammate Yuvraj Singh made 358. Dhoni's contribution to the tournament was 488 runs (9 matches, 12 innings), 5 fifties, 17 catches and 7 stumps. Dhoni was included in the P-19 East Zone squad for the SC Nayudu Trophy  but scored the most effective ninety-seven runs in 4 matches, as the Eastern Zone lost all four matches and finished the rest of the tournament.

In the very last corner, he hit a huge six that flew 112 yards off the bowling of Clint McKay. During the submit-fit presentation, he described this six as more important than the one he hit during the 2011 FIFA World Cup final. He was appointed captain and wicketkeeper of the "Team of the Tournament" at the 2014 ICC World T20 Championship.

2007 ICC World Twenty20

He did this by posting a video on Instagram that contained images of both the best and worst moments of his career with the song Mai Pal do Pal ka Shayar Hoon playing in the background. At the 2007 Cricket World Cup, India was placed in Group B along with Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Bermuda. Rahul Dravid was the team captain at this World Cup. In 3 matches played by India, they managed to win the most effective match against Bermuda, and the rest - against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. In their first close call against Bangladesh, India went for just 191 from 49.3 overs. Dhoni went to zero. He stumped Tamim Iqbal, Shakib Al-Hassan and captain Habibul Bashar inside the net, but India were five wickets short. In the subsequent in-form match against Bermuda, India posted the then highest World Cup score of 413/5 in a "must win" suit. Dhoni scored 29 from 25 balls, including two 4's and one 6. India picked up their form with 257 runs. India turned in a must - win for their final organization in opposition to the Sri Lankans, but they got it wrong by using 69 runs. With a target of 255, India collapsed to 185 in just forty-three years. Three frames. Dhoni was dismissed with the score 0 for the second time in the match, conceding his first goal through Muttiya Muralitharan. Thus, India turned into a sector cup in the first round. The team was heavily criticized for its performance. Dhoni's production house in Ranchi was attacked by about 2 hundred fans after the loss in Bangladesh.

Cricket World Cup 2011
Under the leadership of Captain Dhoni, India hosted the 2011 World Cup. In the most recent match against Sri Lanka, chasing 275, Dhoni moved up the batting order, coming in ahead of the in-form Yuvraj Singh. When he got here to bat, India needed more than six runs, according to more than three top-order batsmen who had already been ignored. He started building a very good partnership with Gautam Gambhir. Thanks to their excellent stroking game and energetic running among the wickets, they have accumulated the desired running charge. Dhoni became on 60 out of 60 balls, but later expanded with an additional frequency of restrictions, finishing with ninety-one not out of 79 balls. As befitted the occasion, he finished in form in style with a massive six over long bowler Nuwan Kulasekara and won the Man of the Match award. Later in the submit-fit presentation, he admitted that he came up with the order to counter the threat of Muralitharan's spin, as he dressed up as the very bowling-familiar Murali who became his teammate in the Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Chennai Super Kings. It came after the dismissal of Virat Kohli, also a superior batsman. Partnering with the left-handed Gambire, he has provided a right-left unit in the crease, making it difficult for bowlers to get comfortable with the rhythm. The bat used by Dhoni in the most recent landing is offered for 72 lacs. The money goes to the Sakshi Rawat Foundation, which works with the assistance of Dhoni's husband Sakshi Rawat to help orphaned children.

Cricket World Cup 2015
At the 2015 World Championships held in Australia and New Zealand, Dhoni was appointed captain of the 30-man team by the BCCI in December 2014.Under his leadership, India made it to the semifinals without problems, beating Bangladesh in the quarterfinals. However, they failed to host Australia in the semi-final held at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The group received 7 consecutive matches at this World Cup and received eleven consecutive standard matches at the World championships. With the win in Bangladesh, he became the first non-Australian captain to win a hundred ODI matches, and the first Indian captain to receive that mark. He is also the 0.33 captain, having won a hundred matches after the Australians, Ricky Ponting and Allan Border.

Cricket World Cup 2019
Dhoni was part of the 15-man squad for the 2019 Cricket World Cup held in England and Wales. Dhoni scored several available knockouts in the tournament in South Africa, Australia and the West Indies, although he was criticised for his strike fee and "lack of intent" in facing Afghanistan and England. In the semi-final against New Zealand, Dhoni scored a combative half-century in the second innings, but turned in a woefully run - out at an important stage, ending India's run to the World Cup.

Dhoni married Sakshi Singh Rawat, a classmate at DOW Jawahar Vidya Mandir, Shyamali and a native of Dehradun, Uttarakhand, on 4 July 2010.During their marriage, she took control of the hotel and started working as an intern in Taj Bengal, Kolkata. After Sakshi's father left his tea business, the family moved to the local Dehradun region.

The wedding took place at some point after the couple was engaged.
